About the presentation:
This presentation will outline the role of psychologists in legislative advocacy efforts. Attendees will learn strategies for varying levels of advocacy including specific attention to in-person visits at the Capitol.

Lessons you will take away from the presentation:
1. Psychologists have a variety of ways they can engage in political advocacy.
2. Psychologists will be able to determine at least one way in which they can personally engage in advocacy.
3. Psychologists will gain confidence in advocating during in-person meetings with legislators and their staff.

What new skills or knowledge will you be able to apply to your practice/clinical work:
Psychologists will be able to name key legislative agenda items of the Texas Psychological Association for the 2025 Texas Legislative Session.

A testimonial from past attendee of Legislative Day:

When I joined TPA in 2006, my involvement was limited to attending conferences for continuing education. That changed in 2019 when I attended a legislative day with TPA. At first, I was nervous about meeting with legislators, but TPA’s preparation gave me the confidence I needed. They explained the issues, guided us through the process, and ensured we were ready to communicate effectively.

That experience opened my eyes to the critical role advocacy plays in our field. I saw how important it is to help legislators understand our communities’ needs and how we, as psychologists, require support to meet those needs. Advocacy isn’t optional—it’s a responsibility we all share.

Attending that day ignited a passion in me for advocacy, and I remain committed to supporting TPA’s work for the betterment of our profession and the people we serve.
