The Ethics of Self-Disclosure (Ethics from 9am - 12pm)
This workshop will explore the intersection of ethics and self-disclosure in therapeutic settings. Together, we will critically examine the dominant ethical frameworks and cultural biases inherent in traditional approaches to self-disclosure, while offering practical strategies for psychologists to navigate these complexities in a manner that is more inclusive, respectful, and culturally sensitive.
What will attendees learn:
1. Critically evaluate existing ethical guidelines and theoretical frameworks governing self-disclosure in therapy, highlighting their cultural biases and limitations in addressing diverse client experiences.
2. Examine how cultural factors, including race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and socioeconomic status, shape both therapists' and clients' perceptions and experiences of self-disclosure in therapeutic relationships.
3. Provide psychologists with concrete tools and techniques for navigating self-disclosure ethically and responsibly in diverse therapeutic contexts, including considerations of power dynamics, trust-building, and therapeutic alliance.
4. Engage participants in interactive case studies and role-playing exercises to apply decolonial ethics principles to real-world scenarios, fostering critical reflection and skill development.
Healing Racial & Vicarious Trauma:The Role of the Therapeutic Relationship (Diversity 1pm - 4pm)
Grounded in polyvagal theory and evidence-based interventions for trauma, this training will enhance clinical practice for psychologists by defining and demonstrating the presence of racial trauma in clinical settings and its impact on clients and clinicians. Through live demonstrations, in-vivo practice, and skill building activities, participants will enhance their ability to discuss racial trauma with their clients to support client outcome goals while enhancing the psychologist's well-being in managing associated vicarious trauma. At a macro-level, this will increase availability of services for BIPOC and other racial/ethnic minority clients who might otherwise be hesitant to seek care due to their experiences of racial trauma.
What will attendees learn:
1. Participants will examine the impact of racial and vicarious trauma on therapeutic practices of social workers, therapists, and other individuals who support their community in the process of healing from trauma.
2. Participants will develop communication strategies to more effectively discuss racial trauma with their clients.
3. Participants will demonstrate use of strategies to effectively manage vicarious trauma associated with discussions of racial trauma in clinical settings.
