About the presentation: This presentation bridges research and practice to highlight culturally responsive approaches to psychological treatment with Latinx individuals. It draws on empirical findings and applies clinical strategies to examine cultural values, acculturation processes, and systemic stressors that affect mental health. Participants will learn ways to integrate cultural strengths with evidence-based models to create affirming, contextually grounded interventions rooted in cultural humility.
About the speaker: Brandy Piña-Watson, Ph.D., is a counseling psychologist and nationally recognized researcher whose scholarship focuses on Latinx mental health, identity development, and culturally responsive interventions. As an Associate Professor, she trains future psychologists in ethics, multicultural competence, and evidence-based practice, while maintaining an active clinical practice serving diverse adolescents and adults.

Attendees will learn to apply cultural humility, assess Latinx cultural factors without assumptions, and adapt interventions to values like familismo and respeto. They will gain tools to address acculturative stress, discrimination, stigma, and systemic barriers while supporting bicultural navigation and strengthening trust with clients and families.
Attendees will learn to adapt evidence-based interventions to Latinx values, and build alliance through cultural humility. They will strengthen skills in validating discrimination and bicultural stress and support clients facing racism, colorism, stigma, language barriers, and immigration-related fears.
