Virtual Parent-Child Interaction Therapy: New Directions in a Post-Pandemic World
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is a well-established and well-known evidence-based treatment for young children exhibiting acting out and internalizing behaviors. PCIT therapists change the dynamics between parents and children by coaching caregivers while they play with their child so that parents can adapt their behaviors in the moment to help connect with their child and respond to challenges. PCIT has historically been an in-person treatment that takes place in a special clinic room with a one-way mirror. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, many providers have shifted to Internet-Based PCIT and now provide a remote version of the treatment. During this presentation we will discuss the research behind standard PCIT, how PCIT is implemented, and the current research and practical experience of providing Internet-Based PCIT, which is showing extreme promise and is sometimes considered to be preferable to the traditional in-person modality.
