Ethical and Clinical Implications in the Psychological Assessment and
Treatment of Children and Adults with Major Physical and Cognitive Disabilities
At the end of this presentation the attendee will understand ethical and clinical implications of implementing or declining to implement modifications to standard protocols and access barriers for individuals with disabilities. Evidence based interventions and assessment tools in the clinical care of individuals with major disabilities will be reviewed and gaps in the existing research literature will also be highlighted. Attendees will be instructed in strategies for modifying psychological interventions and assessment tools when working with individuals with major disabilities which impact the standard administration of these psychological tools.
About the Speakers
Dr. Jacob Williams is a licensed psychologist and is the Director of the Department of Rehabilitation Psychology/ Neuropsychology at TIRR Memorial Hermann. He has clinical and research experience in the treatment of psychosocial impact of chronic health conditions, sleep disorders, post traumatic symptoms, and chronic pain conditions. Dr. Williams has been a staff member at TIRR Memorial Hermann since 2015 and previously worked within the Spinal Cord Injury service line. Dr. Williams completed his Doctoral and Masters degrees at the University of Florida, Department of Clinical and Health Psychology. He completed his internship with the South Texas Veterans Health Care System in San Antonio and post-doctoral training focused on the treatment of post-traumatic stress and related conditions among active duty military at the University of Texas Health Science Center– San Antonio.
For the past 13 years, Dr. Gibbs has worked at TIRR Memorial Hermann performing neuropsychological evaluations, cognitive rehabilitation, and clinical research with persons who have brain injury. He received an intramural award from TIRR for an investigation of progressive cardiovascular intervention for the treatment of persistent physical and neurocognitive symptoms in adolescents with sports concussion. Dr. Gibbs has been an investigator and clinical coordinator on two previous NIH funded studies. He served as the site primary investigator for a PCORI funded study of problem solving skills training for adolescents with traumatic brain injury and their parents. His clinical and research interests include cognitive rehabilitation and the neurocognitive and neurobehavioral correlates of traumatic brain injury, stroke, sports concussion, and neurodevelopmental disorders.
Lunch will be served between 12pm - 1pm for all registrants. This is already included in your registration price. Walk ins the day of the event will not have food available, so make you sure register by Wednesday of the week (Oct 18) if you want food!
